While no easy solution exists, companies can succeed in the government marketplace providing they do their research and are patient, said Gloria Larkin, president of TargetGov at Marketing Outsource Associates Inc. Contractors who are patient and smart can enter the market and create a recurring revenue stream that can be lucrative.

To enter the government contracting market, companies should:

  1. Get registered with ccr.gov
  2. Identify the agencies that will buy their service or product
  3. Learn how the government purchases their goods because it's different from private sector
  4. Learn legal and accounting requirements of the contract
  5. Subcontract or join as a team
  6. Be persistent

Nothing happens overnight in selling to the government. It is a long-haul process, she said. Those companies that can run the long race will win over those that expect overnight success.

Contractors Must Show Experience

Government officials look for relative experience, staffing at companies, credentials, certifications and safety ratings, said Marco Giamberardino, senior director for the federal and heavy construction division of Associated General Contractors.
