Concrete is a very durable and tough material that is commonly used for basement floors because it allows the floor to be laid down right over the gravel and allows for maximum ceiling height. The problem associated with concrete floors tends to be the cold of the floor negating the comfort of the living space. Using a specific in floor heating design can turn uncomfortable concrete floors into the most comfortable floors in the house.

In-floor Water Heating

Before any concrete is pouted on the floor, the gravel is added and compacted down with a plate compactor so that the gravel is level throughout. 1 ½ to 2 inch thick high density foam board is placed on the ground above the gravel. All the seams are taped and the foam board is cut to snuggly fit together. Some foam board types that are specifically designed for in-floor heat have a raised disc stamp pattern on the foam boards that allow the houses to be ran in a loop pattern. In either case, this is an essential part of the in-floor heating system as it prevents heat loss through the ground.
